House Bill EHB 1044, which would mandate health insurance plans that cover maternity care to also provide abortion coverage, appears to be “dead” for this session. The legislation passed the House, and was heard in the Senate Health Care Committee, but did not come up for a vote. Attempts to bring the legislation before the entire Senate were defeated by a 25-23 vote.
If proponents had been successful, Washington State would have been the first state in the nation to mandate abortion coverage in insurance plans.
Urging legislators to oppose the legislation, Catholic Archbishop J. Peter Sartain of Seattle presented testimony in the Senate Health Care Committee.
