Immigration Debate to Continue This Week

June 4, 2007

On June 5th the U.S. Senate is scheduled to resume debate on S. 1348, The Immigration Reform Act of 2007, a bill that addresses border security and immigration enforcement, creates a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants in the U.S., establishes a temporary worker program, and makes changes to the family preference and worker visa systems.

S. 1348 contains many important elements of comprehensive immigration reform. However, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the WSCC have significant concerns regarding certain aspects of S. 1348. Several amendments will be offered and we ask that you urge your Senators to support amendments that strengthen and bring together families and oppose amendments that restrict justice for immigrants.
