Legislative Session Concludes

April 27, 2007

The Legislature adjourned on April 22nd after crafting a $33.4 billion budget for the 2007-2009 biennium. There were increases or new funding for many vital services and programs, but no increases for others. Similarly, WSCC’s work resulted in the passage of some priority legislation, but we were unsuccessful on a handful of other bills.

WSCC successes included helping to pass legislation that secures health care for all children, allows more people into the Basic Health Plan, bans toxic flame retardants, assists local governments to create more affordable housing and helps ex-offenders transition back into society. We also helped to prevent the passage of bills that would have encouraged embryonic stem cell research.

Unfortunately, there were no increases in the budget for TANF and GA-U grants nor WASL funding for private schools.  Reforms were not enacted in the payday loan industry, nor were voting rights for former felony offenders restored.  Legislation to restrict the death penalty did not pass. WSCC will continue to work for the passage of these issues during the next legislative session.

WSCC opposed the final passage of domestic partnership legislation and a bill mandating a specific sex education curriculum. Both of these pieces of legislation have been signed by the Governor.

Throughout the 105-day session WSCC staff interacted with lawmakers daily. These efforts were greatly enhanced by the advocacy of the Catholic community. Legislators do listen to their constituents.
