Senate Agrees to Complete Farm Bill
December 10, 2007
U.S. Senate leaders have agreed to discuss and vote on the Farm Bill (HR 2419) before going home for the Christmas recess. This legislation authorizes the Food Stamp program and The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), defines domestic agricultural policies, and guides U.S. policies in addressing hunger worldwide.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed its Farm Bill this summer with provisions that are slightly better than the current Senate proposals. Maintaining the House funding levels, improving access to food stamps, and protecting the viability of small farms domestically and abroad should be priorities for the Senate bill.
Amendments to the Farm Bill include the Dorgan/Grassley amendment which would set limits on commodity payments and direct those payments to working farmers – rather than to their landlords – and to small farms instead of to agribusinesses. A just and adequately funded Farm Bill will feed hungry children, families and seniors and serve as a necessary support system to fight poverty. CLICK HERE to read more and to take action.
