In the Darfur region, an area the size of Texas, reliable estimates indicate that 400,000 people have died, more than 2.5 million are homeless, and at least 3.5 million people are at risk of starvation. The World Health Organization estimates that 10,000 more people are dying each month. Malnutrition, malaria and cholera are among the greatest health risks. Equally dangerous is the vast insecurity of the region, with continued attacks on civilians and humanitarian aid operations.  Peace talks sponsored by the African Union between the government in Khartoum and rebel groups in Darfur recently broke down.  While the talks were extended after the deadline, it is unclear whether the extension made it more or less likely that a deal will be reached.

The Darfur Peace and Accountability Act (H.R. 3127) would impose sanctions against individuals responsible for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, and would support measures for the protection of civilians and humanitarian operations, and support peace efforts in Darfur.  While H.R. 3127 passed the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly a few weeks ago, it must still be reconciled with a previously passed Senate version (S.1462) of the bill.

Click here to urge the President, your two U.S. Senators, and your Congressperson to pass the strongest possible version of the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act into law.
